What is Mexico's pathway to limit global warming to 1.5°C?

Buildings

Last update: 1 June 2021

Building sector emissions in Mexico have been decreasing in recent years.1 This decrease is mainly a result of strong energy efficiency policies in public, private, and commercial buildings, including national standards and energy efficiency product labelling.2

Scaling

The share of electricity in the sector’s final energy demand in 2019 was 36%. This share would need to nearly double by 2030 to align with 1.5°C compatible pathways and reach 72–92% by 2040. The sector could reach full decarbonisation by around 2045.

Mexico has public policy incentives in place for efficient building construction, including the Green mortgage and EcoCasa programmes. Local governments also support zero-emission buildings, offering tax reductions for buildings with photovoltaic systems.3

Although some measures exist to reduce emissions from the building sector, more action is needed, such as providing greater incentives for renovations and energy-efficient new buildings.4 Better insulated buildings would reduce the need for air conditioning, leading to a reduction in both energy consumption and emissions.5

Direct CO₂ emissions only are considered (see power sector for electricity related emissions, hydrogen and heat emissions are not considered here).
